Queen’s Gambit

A new Netflix new mini series, gets very good reviews: here is 后翼弃兵. Queen’s gambit (or Aleppo Gambit ) is one of the openings in chess, starts with

1. d4 d5
2. c4

The 7-episode series has very good acting: many chess moves were accompanied by their facial expression – for the non players to enjoy, and the story is gripping.

However, as I was watching, I wondered, is Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) doing girls/women a service or disservice, because there is never a female world champion.

The strongest female player in the world is Judit Polgár (1976-), the youngest of Polgár sisters from Hungary. Her peak rating was 2735 in July 2005. (Alexander Alekhine passed away 1946 at age of 53.) Judit did beat Garry Kasparov once in 2002 but the world chess championship in 2018 played 12 games. I love to see women to succeed and by far they do, in many fields – the latest is Kim Ng becomes Miami Marlines’ general manager – first girl boss in the major league (!!!), but dislike cheesy way: hit like a man, please.

By the way, with the absence of Judit Polgár, China produced a few lady champs.

Also, watching this mini series, I can’t stop thinking about Bobby Fischer (1943-2008) … don’t get me start …
